Title:  Why Morse Theory?

Abstract:   Morse theory starts off with the insight that one can study the topological properties of a manifold by studying (real-valued) functions on the manifold. Not only is this a rich theory on its own, but it also shows up (often surprisingly) in a lot of applications. In this talk, we will give an introduction to the basic ideas of Morse theory and Morse homology and discuss some interesting consequences.
