Math 105-02: Calculus I: Reading Homework 2.4--5

  1. Interpretations of the Derivative : what is the purpose of this section?
    1. Notation : what is the alternate notation for the derivative that is introduced here? how do we write g'(3) in this notation?
    2. Units : how can we use units to interpret the derivative?
  2. The Second Derivative : what is the second derivative?
    1. Meaning : what does the first derivative tell us about a function? what does the second derivative tell us about the first derivative? what does it tell about the concavity of the original function?
      1. as a rate of change : what does the second derivative tell us as a rate of change? in example 3, how does the book conclude that the second derivative of the velocity is negative?
