Math 224-01: Differential Equations: Reading Homework 2.6

  1. Computer Implementation :
    1. Numerical solvers : what, besides step-size, might a solver require to be specified for determination of the accuracy or range of a calculation?
    2. Numerical errors :
      1. nonexact arithmetic : what do we mean by error introduced by nonexact arithmetic? what is round-off error? what is total error? what is the nasty feature of round-off error?
      2. step-size errors : what types of errors may be introduced by taking too large of a step with a numerical method?
      3. long-term degredation : what do we mean by long-term degredation of a numerical solution?
    3. Other methods : what other general observations can we draw about numerical methods for solving differential equations?
