projects index
A somewhat out-of-date Meta-index of projects on which I may be
currently working. Much of this
has moved to the instructional technology
development server,
or the
production server.

- UMich information and support for
instructors of mathematics:
- Old exam retriever: dynamic
list generator
- E-mail groups:
There's an ITD page,
http://www.itd.umich.edu/itddoc/r/r1176/form.html,
which allows you to request class
listservs. For information about this, see the corresponding
ITD
information page.
- StarOffice: to run StarOffice, which
includes a very Excel-like spreadsheet ("StarCalc"),
- log in to a computer
- type
soffice
.
- Note: it is reported that if you try and
enter a path name starting with
/afs
in
StarOffice it may hang. To avoid this, just
navigate with the directory buttons. Also
Note: the first time you run StarOffice it runs
a setup program to install a bunch of files in your
home directory. The setup program chooses a
reasonable set of defaults, and it's safe to just go
with them.
StarOffice has the desirable characteristic that it can
read and write Microsoft Office ('97; not 2000) formats
(Word .doc
, Excel .xls
files,
etc.) with fair reliability. For other information, you
might see the
StarOffice
"Technical" FAQ, from Sun.
- Directory Info:
To change your directory info, or manually set up an
e-mail group as described in the ITD document
how
to set up e-mail groups, you want to bounce through
the following steps.
- log in to
login.itd.umich.edu
(using
your UMich password, which should be the same as
your math password) using ssh
: in a
terminal window, type ssh login.itd.umich.edu
- run netscape from there by typing
netscape
at the prompt
- open the directory page
http://directory.umich.edu/
and click "user directory: you".
- log in with your UMich uniqname and password.
- you can now edit your information, or create an
e-mail group by clicking "user directory: create
group" or the "create group" link at the bottom of
your entry, then follow the instructions.
