About 15 years ago a collection of extracurricular programs called Math Circles started to appear around the country. Based in part on a similar program in Eastern Europe, these programs focused on the process of mathematical discovery and open-ended exploration, and they were designed to introduce students to deep mathematical topics that are often not covered in the standard curricula. In addition to encountering challenging, new, and exciting material, students joining the Michigan Math Circle have the unique opportunity to interact with professional mathematicians in an informal setting.

See the National Association of Math Circles web page for more details.
