In June, the Department of Mathematics and Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan will co-host the 5th Annual Conference for African-American Researchers in the Mathematical Sciences (CAARMS5). The main goal of this conference is to highlight current work by African-American researchers and graduate students in mathematics. This conference will strengthen the mathematical sciences by encouraging the increased participation of African-American and underrepresented groups in the field, facilitating working relationships between them, and helping to cultivate their careers. In addition to the talks there will be a graduate student poster session and tutorials on topics in mathematics and computer science. These talks, presentations, and discussions will bring a broader perspective to the critical issues involving minority participation in mathematics.
Invited Speakers: Rodrigo Banuelos, John Birge, Carl Graham, Louise Hosseini-Nasab, Charles Isbell, Julie Ivy, Steven Lee, Alfred G. Noel, Monica Y. Stephens, Sonya Stephens, J. Ernest Wilkins (keynote speaker), Herbert Winful, Bryant York
Tutorials by: Johnny E. Brown, Nathaniel Dean, Roscoe Giles, Scott Williams
Graduate Student Contributed Poster Session: The evening session on Wednesday, June 23 will be devoted to poster presentations by graduate students, and is being sponsored by the University of Michigan's Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies. Though the deadline for applying for conference support has passed, graduate students wishing to present a poster may still explore the possibility of partial support for attending by immediately contacting Dr. William A. Massey (908-582-3225, will@research.bell-labs.com) and providing him a textfile by e-mail containing the title and abstract. Call for Posters
